Campfire Cuisine

Campfire Cuisine
around the campfire…?

Some of my fondest memories are from time spent around the campfire. When I was a boy my father use to take me for trips into Ontario. We would travel by canoe deep into Canadian wilderness from lake to lake. We would go where there were no roads. The fishing was great and the campfires stories were even better. Simple foods cooked on the campfire tasted better than the finest cuisine found anywhere. Life just didn’t get any better.

We are from the da Michigan U.P. We took weekend camping/fishing trips throughout the U.P. on most summer weekends. Sometimes the whole family would come but most of the time it was just the two of us. The campfire time was the best bonding time possible. I never wanted these times to end. But they did.

I wanted to keep my family close. Money was tight but camping/fishing cost very little. The campfire magic was there. Memories enough to last a lifetime. We still do it. I wonder if it will ever end.

Any campfire magic stories out there?

I was around 10-12 yrs old, somewhere in there, and I lived with my mother. I used to spend 3 weeks in the summer with my father, but he was a workaholic so I didn’t see alot of him. We used to try to get away for a few days each summer on a camping trip.

One summer he took a week off and we went on a fishing trip to Newfoundland. We took our tent, boat and everything else we could fit into his truck and off we went. We spent the first night of the trip camping in the brush near a lake, no campgrounds or anything. We had brought a small television with us, about a 4 inch screen and plugged it into the lighter of the truck. It was early June and the NHL Stanley Cup Finals were on. We sat by the fire with the TV on the hood of the truck, antenna positioned just right to get the game. It was staticy, and in black and white, but I think its the most memorable hockey game I’ve ever watched.

We spent the week living in the bush, only food we had was a small bit we brought with us, and the fish we caught during the trip. We had a blast.
